Greasley, Nottinghamshire
Greasley Parish (Beauvale Priory), April 17th 1900
Beauvale Priory founded by Nicholas de Cantalupe on December 9th 1343, was a monastery for a Prior and twelve monks of the Carthusian Order, to which he gave land and rents in parishes of Greasley and Selston and the advowsons of the churches of these two parishes.

Nicholas de Cantalupe was also a deeply religious man and a generous benefactor of the church.
He founded a chantey in Lincoln Cathedral, and on December 9th 1343, a monastery in the beautiful vale (Beauvale) in his park of Greasley (High Park).
In this picturesque country side of rolling hills, nestling in the a small spinney amongst the trees there is a ancient old farm-house known as Abbey farm there amidst the forest scenery in this secluded locality this Abbey stood for centuries, the house of the Carthusian Order, at the dissolution of the monasteries there were only nine of the Carthusian Order in England, and Beauvale is on the list given in Dugdale as one of them. .

These monks lived very simple lives, it would be interesting to find what sort of men entered into this Order. And gave to it the distinction of being one of the nine English houses which owed allegiance to the Grand Prior of Chartreuse.
The lead similar lives to the Benedictine, but they were the strictest of the many different Religious Orders, and the use of flesh meat was absolutely forbidden, Each monk had his own living area but was restricted to the inside of the Abbey .

This exquisite formal piece of glass was found, and brought back to grace the Greasley St Mary’s church windows as the priory has no window glass anymore.
